Matt has been training at Transform York for nearly a year after first discovering the business through Instagram.
At the time, he was doing plenty of cardio but very little strength training — not because he didn’t want to, but because lifting weights felt intimidating and risky.
The Challenge
Before joining Transform, Matt was running and doing cardio regularly, yet still finding that his weight was creeping up.
On top of that:
- He wasn’t happy with his body shape
- His clothes were starting to feel tight
- He had a history of back problems
- Strength training felt overwhelming and unsafe
He knew he needed to do something different — but wasn’t confident trying weights on his own.
Why He Nearly Didn’t Start
Matt admits he felt nervous at the beginning.
Walking into a gym environment, lifting weights for the first time, and training with other people pushed him well outside his comfort zone. His biggest worry was hurting his back or doing exercises incorrectly.
What reassured him was the small group setup and the knowledge that trainers would be watching closely and guiding him through every movement.
The Turning Point
From his first sessions, Matt realised this wasn’t a competitive or intimidating environment.
Instead, he found:
- Small group training with a real sense of community
- Trainers who actively coached technique and form
- A supportive, encouraging atmosphere
- Clear guidance around strength training done safely
Alongside training, Matt also followed a nutrition plan focused on:
- Eating more protein
- Staying within a daily calorie target
- Making changes that felt realistic and sustainable
Importantly, it never felt restrictive or overwhelming.
The Results
After nearly a year at Transform Personal Training, Matt has seen steady, meaningful progress:
Increased strength and confidence in the gym
Weight loss and noticeable fat loss
Clothes fitting much better
Dropped a full jeans size
Improved confidence in how he looks and feels
Here’s what Matt had to say:
“I feel a lot happier in how I look and how my clothes fit. With the right guidance behind you, you’d be surprised at what you can achieve.”
What This Means for You
If you’ve been relying on cardio, feel intimidated by weights, or worry about injuring yourself, Matt’s story shows you’re not alone — and that you don’t have to figure it out by yourself.
With the right coaching, strength training becomes:
- Safe
- Confidence-building
- Enjoyable
- Incredibly effective
That’s exactly how we approach it at Transform York.
