Jean has been training at Transform York for around seven years — and her journey began thanks to a gentle nudge from her daughter.
After an accident while travelling in the Arctic and with another holiday planned, Jean’s daughter suggested she work with Tom, knowing he had specialist qualifications in training older adults and people with disabilities.
Jean admits she qualified on both counts — and decided to give it a go.
She’s never looked back.
The Challenge
Before joining Transform, Jean was doing okay — but she didn’t realise how much better she could feel.
After her accident, mobility, strength, and confidence were real concerns. Like many people, she also knew that exercising at home simply wasn’t realistic.
“I haven’t got the discipline to do it at home.”
Big gyms weren’t appealing either — they felt intimidating and impersonal.
Jean needed:
- Safe, structured training
- Expert support
- A welcoming, non-intimidating environment
- Confidence that she was in capable hands
Why She Decided to Start
What reassured Jean most was knowing that Tom was properly qualified to work with people in her situation.
That trust made it easier to walk through the door — and once she did, everything changed.
“To be honest, I’ve never ever looked back.”
The Turning Point
Over the years, Jean has worked with three different trainers, including Tom — and each has supported her in their own way.
Training became something she genuinely enjoyed. The sessions pushed her just enough, safely and appropriately, and helped her rediscover what her body was capable of.
“I enjoy the challenges — just being able to do things.”
The Results
Jean’s progress has been life-changing, not just in the gym, but in everyday life:
Much stronger overall
Able to walk for longer
Can bend down and pick things up easily
Can get up from the floor without holding onto anything
Improved balance and mobility
Huge boost in overall wellbeing
As Jean puts it:
“I always thought I was okay before — but now I’m good.”
Perhaps the biggest win of all?
“I feel younger than I probably am.”
What This Means for You
If you’re worried about mobility…
If you’ve had an injury and don’t know where to start…
If big gyms put you off…
If you want to stay strong, independent, and confident as you get older…
Jean’s story shows that it’s never about being the youngest or the fittest — it’s about finding the right support.
At Transform, everyone belongs.
“It’s not intimidating at all. Everybody is so nice, friendly — I just feel like one of the gang.”
