Niall joined Transform York in April 2024 after moving back to York from London. At the time, he was coming off the back of a demanding master’s degree and feeling completely burnt out.
Nearly ten months on, he’s fitter, lighter, more confident and performing better on the basketball court than ever.
The Challenge
Before starting at Transform York, Niall admits life felt pretty rough.
He was dealing with:
- Burnout after finishing his master’s
- A diet that had completely fallen apart
- Comfort eating and over-treating
- Very low activity levels
After joining a local basketball team in York, he quickly realised how unfit he’d become. While he loved playing, he couldn’t keep up — and that was the wake-up call.
His goal wasn’t just weight loss. He wanted to get fitter, move better, and become a real asset to his team.
Why He Nearly Didn’t Start
Like many people, Niall knew personal training was more of an investment than a standard gym membership.
He’d also fallen into the common trap of thinking, “If I just go to the gym a few times a week, I’ll be fine” — without a clear plan, structure, or any support around nutrition.
What he needed was accountability, direction, and something tailored specifically to him.
The Turning Point
From the start, Niall was clear about his priorities: training that would directly improve his basketball performance.
His sessions were built around that goal, including:
- Basketball-specific strength work
- Plyometrics and explosive movements
- Structured sessions planned in advance
- Ongoing support with nutrition and portion control
When his fat loss progress plateaued, addressing nutrition properly made all the difference. Having honest, practical conversations about calories, protein, and habits helped him move past the sticking point and keep progressing.
Just as importantly, training became non-negotiable.
It was an appointment — no excuses, no overthinking — just turn up and get it done.
The Results
Since joining Transform York, Niall has achieved results that go far beyond what he expected:
Four stone lost within his first year
Improved confidence at work and day-to-day life
Clothes fitting again — and coming back out of the wardrobe
More minutes and more points on the basketball court
A clear, sustainable approach to training and nutrition
Here’s how Niall put it:
“Everything I asked for from the basketball side of things has come true — and to a much bigger extent.”
What This Means for You
If you’re burnt out, out of routine, or fed up with going to the gym without a plan, Niall’s story shows what’s possible with the right structure.
This isn’t about random workouts or guessing what to eat. It’s about:
- Training that fits your goals
- Support that looks at the whole picture
- Consistency without mental effort
At Transform York, you don’t just train — you follow a plan built around you.
